TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE 🛠 Our devs undertook the job of refactoring SNS Collectors. It’s part of SNS Optics that collects & aggregates data for anything SNS related. Refactoring stabilized this API & allows for almost real-time updates on our website 👇

To do this we had to completely rewrite the collector infrastructure, with 3 goals in mind: 1️⃣ Sharing as much code as possible between different data sources 2️⃣ Running the entire collector set as 1 process for better sharing of resources 3️⃣ Better error logging & handling The above article focuses on the use of traits, generic objects and dynamic typing to maximize code sharing It’s easy to say that the API was stabilized & speed enhanced but not always as easy to understand the deep digging involved to bring this about Relying completely on the blockchain requires us to sometimes compensate on speed/efficiency. However, w the trading activity involving SNS something had to be done Hence we wrote the dev note above for our more tech savvy crowd to better understand the heavy lifting required

START OF PLANS FOR FREE DOMAIN NAME RENEWAL 📝 As promised in the previous Townhall, I said I would lay out all the thoughts surrounding free domain name renewal for us to discuss. Reasoning for renewal: On-chain diagnostics show a few community members holding a large number of domain names. We want to prevent squatters from holding on to domains in a sense that exploits the community. Which is (1) preventing domain names from being used & (2) stifling the growth of our community - in ways such as not distributing domain names to brands/companies that could help the adoption of domain names globally. Simple yearly renewals may become a logistical burden for these users and allow domains to be returned to the market. This also advocates for legitimate use of domain names. For those companies or community members that hold domains and really want to keep them, the effort to renew yearly should be minimal. Yet, act as a deterrent for others where the motive is different. Lastly, domain names registered to wallets whose private keys have been misplaced leads to domain names being lost forever. With a renewal system we have the opportunity to recover these domain names and redistribute them . Hence why we want to propose rent-free domain name renewal. A process where owners simply signal that they still own the domain and pay a subsequent gas free for the transaction. There is no intent to make a profit but rather to stimulate a healthier domain name ecosystem. While we discuss, I thought it would be helpful to lay out some plans that we've been discussing for inspiration. Nothing is set in stone except that it will be free domain name renewal 👇

Notes on recent developments + dev stuff 1. UI Improvements The name service UI was originally built with Vite.JS, while this is an amazing framework and a much better dev experience than the default create-react app it became less adapted to the needs of the name service UI. Vite.JS is a client-side rendering framework with very limited server-side rendering or server-side generation support. CSR is fine for single-page apps but as the dApp grows it becomes unadapted and ends up bloated with enormous Javascript payloads sent to the client. Surely, moving from one React framework to another should be fine? It depends on the size of the app. Things can break and the bigger the app the more cumbersome it gets, but once the routing etc are done the results are pretty good. Another trick to improve UI speed is removing JS dependencies. Removing Metaplex dependencies from one of Bonfida's packages and reimplementing some of the methods ourselves saved ~800kB which takes ~3.34s to load on a slow 3G network…

FOXWALLET: FIRST BNB INTEGRATION 🦊 It is with great pleasure to announce that FoxWallet has integrated the Solana name service! They have integrated .sol domains on Solana and managed to be the first wallet to integrate SNS on the BNB Smart Chain. This allows for efficient payments on both chains - you can use your .sol to send and receive funds instead of the chains’ respective pubkeys. CHINESE BLOG AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE 🇨🇳 We're excited to announce that our blog (https://bonfida.org/blog) will now be presented in both English and Chinese! By default, the blog will be displayed in English but those who prefer Chinese can just select the zh option to have it translated. Although our blog has always been readily available in Chinese on Medium, we believe the accessibility on our website will be much more convenient. You can also look forward to the whole website being periodically translated into Chinese. We'll start slowly with one section at a time but soon you'll just be able to flip the switch. Please note: the last few blogs still need to be translated (we are 90% done). In the future, you can expect the Chinese blog to be ready a day or two post the English blog.
